Phindile Dube, an ambitious 17-year-old from Pinetown Girls High School in Durban, has played a principle role in the Young Performers Project’s ‘Can you feel it’ in 2013 and is portraying the role of Rusty in ‘Footloose’ in 2014. She scooped up first place in the senior category of the Gateway to Fame 2013 competition and went on to perform at the Dolphins by Starlight at Ushaka Marine World.
In the last 15 years YWAM Ireland has offered scholarships to many young people growing up in the midst of the reality of urban poverty around Durban, South Africa. These young people have now become youth workers, community workers, pastors, reconcilers and activists all over Durban. We hosted a retreat open to all of these former trainees, as well as a reconciliation seminar as beautiful South Africa continues to find its feet just 25 years after the end of apartheid. This retreat was full prayer, fellowship, worship, passion, community and lots of laughter. The nation's top two performing public schools have been identified. Durban's Danville Park Girls High and Eunice Girls High School in Bloemfontein were joint winners at the recent National Education Excellence Awards. We live in a diverse country with 26 institutions of higher education and training. Now more than ever, many of the youth are given an opportunity to study, and some may even get bursaries or scholarships, but not many are given the funds for transportation and other necessities.
